School Structure

This ranking system is a “stand alone” system. It is not affiliated with the ranking system of any other school or institution. In addition to the specific requirements listed under each heading, the following are standard requirements for advancement: 

  • Regular (and on time) attendance to scheduled classes
  • Positive learning attitude (towards self/teacher/fellow students) in every class
  • Adherence to school rules
  • Maintaining MINIMUM of a “C” average in all school subjects
  • Exhibit self control, discipline, and obey parents and teachers at home and school.

NO SASH

Students begin training with no sash. Basic stances, hand strikes, kicks, jumps, as well as the basic “7 Step” routine are taught. School etiquette, rules, and understanding of Chinese terminology are introduced. Students begin learning O-Mei Chuan I at this level.

 RED SASH (1st level)

Requirements include ability to execute basic stances, kicks, hand strikes, jump kicks, perform “7 Step” routine, and perform O-Mei Chuan I. Basic understanding of school etiquette, rules, and basic Chinese terminology are required. A basic understanding of various applications of O-Mei Chuan I are required.

 ORANGE SASH (2nd level)

Requirements include performance of “7 Step” routine, O-Mei Chuan I, Chang Chuan III, 3rd Dan Dao (Broadsword) and/or Gun (Stick), understanding of school etiquette, rules, and Chinese terminology are required. Moderate understanding of applications of O-Mei Chuan I are required.

 YELLOW SASH (3rd level)

Requirements include performance of O-Mei Chuan I, Chang Chuan III, 3rd Dan Dao (Broadsword), jian (Straight Sword), gun (Stick) , and qiang (Spear) routines. Understanding of school etiquette and Chinese terminology as well as ability to recite school rules is required. Applications of various chin na techniques must be displayed.

 GREEN SASH (4th level)*

Requirements include performance of Chang Chuan III, O-Mei Chuan II, 3rd Dan Dao (Broadsword), jian (Straight Sword), gun (Stick) , and qiang (Spear)  routines, 4th Dan long weapon (gun OR qiang) and short weapon (dao OR jian), sparring, and various chin na techniques must be displayed. Solid understanding of school etiquette and Chinese terminology and the ability to recite school rules is required.

 BLUE SASH (5th level) **

Requirements include performance of O-Mei Chuan II, Chang Chuan IV, 4th Dan Dao (Broadsword), jian (Straight Sword), gun (Stick) , and qiang (Spear)  routines, sparring, display of numerous chin na techniques, performance of chi kung exercises (8 Pieces of the Brocade), Simplified Yang Style 24 routine, complete understanding of Chinese terminology and school etiquette, ability to recite school rules is required.

 PURPLE SASH: DONE IN 2 SEPARATE TESTS (6th level) **

Requirements include performance of Chang Chuan IV, V, either Chang Chuan VI or Nanchuan, 4th Dan Dao (Broadsword), jian (Straight Sword), gun (Stick) , and qiang (Spear), 5th Dan long weapon (gun OR qiang) 5th Dan short weapon (dao OR jian), Simplified Yang Style 24, Yang 32 Form, sparring, performance of various chin na techniques, complete understanding of school rules, Chinese terminology, and school etiquette are required.

 BROWN SASH: DONE IN 2 SEPARATE TESTS (7th level) ***

Requirements include performance of Chang Chuan IV, V, either Chang Chuan VI OR Nanchuan, 4th Dan Dao (Broadsword), jian (Straight Sword), gun (Stick) , and qiang (Spear) routines, 5th Dan and 6th Dan long weapon (gun OR qiang) and short weapon (dao OR jian), “optional” empty hand routine, “optional” weapon routine, Simplified Yang Style 24, Yang Style 32, Combined 42 Tai Chi, 4th Dan Tai Chi Sword form, various chin na applications, sparring, complete understanding of Chinese terminology, school etiquette, school rules, and wushu history are required.

 BLACK SASH: DONE IN 3 TESTS (8th level) ***

Requirements include performance of all basic kicks, hand strikes, jumps (as well as verbal breakdown of correct movements), “7 Step” routine, O-Mei Chuan I, O-Mei Chuan II, Chang Chuan III, IV, V, either Chang Chuan VI OR Nanchuan, 3rd AND 4th Dan dao, jian, gun, qiang routines, 5th AND 6th Dan long weapon (gun OR qiang) and short weapon (dao OR jian), “optional” empty hand and weapon routine, Chi Kung exercises, Simplified Yang Style 24, Yang Style 32, Combined 42 Tai Chi, 4th AND 5th Dan Tai Chi sword, various chin na techniques, sparring, complete understanding of Chinese terminology, school etiquette, school rules, and Wushu history are required.

 *It is recommended that students begin studying tai chi as well at this point. The study of internal as well as external Wushu is vital to a complete understanding of Chinese martial arts.
